How To Fix A Bricked Motherboard

A bricked motherboard has been damaged such that it no longer functions as intended. Various factors can cause this, but it most often occurs when a PC is subjected to excessive heat or voltage.

To fix a bricked motherboard, the user will need to remove the power supply unit (PSU) and chipset, clean all the solder joints on the motherboard with a soldering iron and re-attach them in the correct sequence, and then install the PSU and chipset.

What causes a bricked motherboard?

Any component on the motherboard can be damaged, but most often, this occurs when the unit is subjected to excessive heat or voltage.

Heat: The solder in the motherboard can melt and fuse, causing a short circuit between components.

Voltage: A crack in the circuit board can allow a charge to leak through. The most common causes of voltage leakage are poor quality solder joints and damaged parts that touch other components.

Short Circuit: A short circuit is caused when a component touches another component, allowing an electrical current to flow between the two. The most common cause of a short circuit is a bent pin in the motherboard connector. This is caused by heat and/or poor quality solder.

Pinched Wire: A wire can be between two components and a short circuit. The most common cause of a wire being pinched is when the motherboard is installed in a case that does not allow enough room for the wire to move freely.

The factors that affect the reliability of a motherboard are:

  1. The quality of the components used in the motherboard.
  2. The Amount of heat generated from the components.
  3. The Amount of stress that a component has to endure.
  4. The length of time a component has been exposed to heat and stress.
  5. Temperature Humidity Physical Damage (moisture and dirt) Amount of use.
  6. The warranty on a motherboard is usually expressed in years. Some manufacturers will offer a 3-year warranty or 5-year warranty.

If a motherboard fails, what are the possible causes?

The BIOS is a program that runs during the boot up process. It allows the computer to start up and work appropriately by reading information from a hard disk drive.

There are 2 types of BIOS programs.

The first is a standard BIOS that uses color-coded text to display messages and menu choices. The second is an EZ Setup program that allows users to enter information using a keyboard or mouse. A motherboard can fail for a number of reasons.

The most common causes are:

1. Failure to remove the power adapter from the board at the end of each use.

2. Remove other components connected to the motherboard with jumpers or ribbon cables.

3. Overheating of the motherboard.

4. Overclocking of the CPU results in overheating and failure of the motherboard to function correctly.

A BIOS contains information about the motherboard, including its specifications and hardware configuration.

What are the Symptoms of a bricked motherboard?

Symptoms of a bricked motherboard can be the following:

1. System shuts down and cannot reboot.

2. Power LED stays on, and the system does not POST (Power On Self Test).

3. No video output from the monitor.

4. No video output from the monitor.

5. No POST (Power On Self Test) results in a locked-up system that cannot be rebooted.

6. No video output from the monitor.

How to fix a bricked motherboard?

There are a few ways to fix a bricked motherboard.

1. If the BIOS on the motherboard is not yet corrupted, you can use a motherboard recovery disk to restore the POST (Power On Self Test) and load the default motherboard BIOS settings.

2. Remove all motherboard components, like RAM modules and hard drives, and then connect the power supply to the board.

3. If you have a system with a defective processor, remove all motherboard components and reinstall it in another system or on another motherboard.

4. If there is a damaged or missing component, you can replace the element with a compatible one and then reset the BIOS settings to factory settings.

Conclusion

Now you know how to reset the BIOS settings on your motherboard. Always follow the instructions for resetting the BIOS correctly, and then reinstall all components of your computer. Be sure to back up important data before you reset the BIOS settings.
